Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 32:5
Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Thought for the Day: On this day in 1290, King Edward issued the Edict of Expulsion.  With his signature, he ordered all the Jews to be expelled from England.  Bigotry and hate definitely played into this act, but Edward seemed to be willing to join this growing intolerance because he would receive all the money confiscated from the Jewish families at the time of expulsion.  This hostility was justified by the church with the use of bad Biblical interpretation and some wild theological gymnastics.  It is very damaging when the church excuses or even gives blessing to sin.  Suffering is magnified, and the body of Christ loses its credibility.  Confession is needed, not only in the lives of individuals, but also the body formed by those individuals.  It is this confession that will lead to healing and the needed change.

Prayer: Lord God, it is difficult to acknowledge my sinfulness, and too often I have some how justified it in your name.  Forgive, not only my initial sin, but also the ways I have defended this sin.  Amen.
