Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 8:7
When they kept on questioning Jesus, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Thought for the Day: I saw him approaching the church.  His hands and face were dirty.  Though he wore a button down shirt, it was filthy.  I knew all the stories.  He would have a long drawn out tale of some horrible circumstance, and then at the end, he would make a faith statement about the compassion of Jesus as an entry point into a request for money.  As I went to the door to meet him, I already had my response ready.  I opened the door and he said, “Can I use your phone.  My car broke down and I’ve been trying to fix it.  I left my cell phone at the office, and I need to call my wife.”  I stumbled all over myself as I tried to find a simple, “Sure!”  Within fifteen minutes, his wife was pulling into our parking lot.  If the disheveled look of an individual has disparaging thoughts coming to my mind, what other prejudices slant my view away from God’s embracing love?

Prayer: As you have seen the goodness within me, O God of everlasting compassion, may I view others with the same grace.  Amen
