Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 82:4
Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Thought for the Day: There are those things that might trouble us, but we can ignore them in hopes that they will go away. That’s not the best approach, but with limited time and resources, it is often the reality even for those who care. My fear is that we in the church are ignoring some situations that should have never been ignored. One of the great concerns here in the community of NW Houston is human trafficking, especially sexually oriented businesses. The prostitution of young women who are being enslaved in the back rooms of what appear to be legitimate businesses is happening very close to where many of us live. We can shake our heads, but ignore the problem. Or we can become outraged at the immoral activity, but this often blames the women who are the victims. We need to act against those who enslave these women for financial gain, but unless we deal with those who frequent these establishments, they will pop up somewhere else with more young women being exploited by those who will use whatever means necessary to make money. There are young girls who cry out for our help. Let’s not ignore them. (There is a Task Force in NW Houston working to close these establishment. It is a start.)

Prayer: O Liberating Lord, where human beings are used as objects, may your church act to rescue them as you once did for an enslaved people. Amen.
