Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 8:19
A scribe then approached and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

Thought for the Day: Epictetus, the Greek philosopher, was thought to have said, “Imagine for yourself a character, a model personality, whose example you determine to follow, in private as well as in public.”  I think Epictetus might have been on to something here, and like the scribe in the scripture, choosing Jesus as that model would be an excellent decision.  But notice the last words in that quote.  We are to follow this character in both public and private, when people are watching and when no one will ever know.  Let us work toward a faith that resembles Jesus in every moment of each day.

Prayer: You have called me to faith, O Merciful God, and given me an amazing example.  Continue to encourage me through the gift of your spirit, and when I falter, renew me with your unconditional love.  Amen.
