Scripture: Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Thought for the Day: We always like watching the underdog pull out the victory. Just the other day I was watching the Olympics, and in a matter minutes, I witnessed three separate underdogs claim victory in two separate sports. Jesus seemed to take a special liking to the underdogs of life. To the meek, he promised them the earth. This was not a wise bet on Jesus’ part since the meek never won anything. Instead, they tend to be trampled by the powerful and influential. Yet when Jesus announced this farfetched notion, he wasn’t betting on the long shot. He was stating the truth. Years ago I turned on the TV and started watching a football game. My roommate at the time walked in and said, “Cleveland wins!” “You wish,” I responded, since Cleveland was the underdog. What I hadn’t realized is that I was watching the replay. Cleveland had already won. Jesus is not stating a wishful dream, but a fact. Now he is waiting for the rest of the world to realize that truth.
Prayer: O Holy God, as a follower of Jesus Christ, may I learn to accept his wager on the underdog as the best bet in town. Amen.
