Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 7:37-38
On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’”

Thought for the Day: Yesterday at our staff meeting, Cory (our sound and lighting engineer) offered an amazing insight.  He described the church’s recent past like a pond that has seen a dramatic drop in the water level.  This change effects everything, and the result is less fish.  To bring it back to life, the pond needs more water.  It’s a simple analogy, but when applied to a church, the response is to say we need more fish in the pond.  Unless there is more water, the increase in fish will be short lived.  We need the life-giving water to sustain both the existing fish and the new ones that will come.  Let’s be less concerned about adding new fish, and more focused on creating a pathway to the flowing waters that will refill the pond.

Prayer: Dear God, where drought has occurred, let us work diligently in creating a new channel through which the life-giving waters will once again nourish those who are parched.  Amen.
