Scripture: 2nd Samuel 9:1
David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
Thought for the Day: In tomorrow’s sermon, this is the opening verse of our focus text. In the verse, David asks an interesting question. At first glance, I missed an important aspect to the question. David is wanting to show kindness for the sake of Jonathan who has died. Often the death of someone will inspire good deeds, and it could be argued that any good deed is a good thing. Yet as people of faith, our desire to show kindness should spring from our loving relationship with God. It should not depend on or be motivated by our relationship with someone or opinion of someone. Kindness should not be spurred by grief, guilt or any other personal feeling. It should be a natural response to a growing relationship with God. It almost sounds as if David is seeking to do kindness in hopes that it will dissuade the heartache he feels over Jonathan’s death. Wouldn’t it be better if kindness was a bit more automatic?
Prayer: You have been kind to me, Gracious God, not as a means of alleviating some feeling of guilt. You are kind because you are kind. What glorious news! Amen.
