Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 16:22
So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

Thought for the Day: Today’s planned devotional will be delayed to bring a thought about Robin Williams. As most of you know, Robin Williams died yesterday. As strange as it may sound, he has been a part of my life since I was very young. It was the Mork and Mindy Show that introduced us to his unique capacity for insane humor, and I never missed it. Yet what impressed me most about this man who could make me laugh harder than any other human was his ability to move into more serious roles, including one of my favorite movies, Good Will Hunting, where Williams played a psychologist named Sean Maguire. Though I’ve watched the movie two dozen times, I still pause when I find it while flipping through the channels. Though there were many brilliant quotes in that movie, I am drawn to one of Williams’ personal comments. He said, “You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” It is true, and too many of us have watched that spark nearly go out. This death might feel as if it will finally extinguish that spark of madness all together, yet I believe his gifts of humor and brilliant acting will once again find a way of bringing joy to the hearts of many who grieve.

Prayer: You are Lord of even the laughter, and we request your assistance as we attempt to experience a little madness, goofiness and silliness each day. Amen.

  1. Amen, may his soul rest in peace. Obviously, money for treatment was not a problem for Robin Williams as it is for others, and yet……..? I wish more research could be done for the mentally ill.
