Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 6:31
Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Thought for the Day: I would guess most people, religious and non-religious, know that basic axiom. Maybe our general familiarity has made us assume we know it’s meaning, yet do we know its full implication? For that reason, I appreciate those who provide me a new take on a well established idea. My favorite poet, Wendell Berry, wrote: “Do unto those downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you.” In a world where most of us are concerned about pollution and chemicals in our drinking water, that perspective helps me to reflect on our interconnectedness… especially as you ponder how the earth is a sphere and thus what goes around eventually comes around.

Prayer: God, grant me continual growth in my understanding of some of your most basic teachings. Without it, my assumptions may have me missing the point all together. Amen.
