Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 8:1-2 (the Message)
Now, friends, I want to report on the surprising and generous ways in which God is working in the churches in Macedonia province. Fierce troubles came down on the people of those churches, pushing them to the very limit. The trial exposed their true colors: They were incredibly happy, though desperately poor. The pressure triggered something totally unexpected: an outpouring of pure and generous gifts.

Thought for the Day: Last night, without warning, I was called into service. The youth were headed to a drive-in movie, and I was looking forward to working at the office late…waiting for Zach who would return around midnight. But an unexpected number of youth showed up (a good problem to have), and I was needed to go as a driver and another adult. The movie was not on my to-see list, but I went nonetheless. It was a bit steamy out, still resting around 90 degrees at 10pm, but the night was clear.  The movie lived up to its lousy reviews, and so my attention was drawn to the skies.  It was the second night of the Perseid Meteor Showers, and though it was a bit early, I saw seven beautiful lights streaking across the sky. It got me to thinking about the unexpected that leads to the unexpected that leads to something beautiful. So often we will do whatever we can to avoid the unexpected. I’m a bit of a control freak, and when I can eliminate or at least minimize surprises, I will do it. But tonight was a good reminder of an unforeseen need leading me to an unanticipated place where my expectations were at an absolute low…yet, beauty and joyful exhilaration where there to be found. Not on the screen, but in the sky. There are moments when we need to let go, enter into the unknown, and wait with hopeful expectation. God just might surprise us.

Prayer: Give me courage to go with the unexpected, Gracious Guide, and to see the beauty of the world that I might have otherwise overlooked. Amen.
