Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Thought for the Day: I had a great lunch with one of the Cypress Creek Christian Church Elders – Marshall Martin – yesterday, and among the many topics we kicked around, the issue of stuff was discussed quite extensively.  Marshall and I have similar thoughts when it comes to the stuff we own and the stuff that owns us.  This stuff may not be the source of our frustrations in life (though it might be), but clutter aggravates, complicates and intensifies frustration.  Multiple studies have demonstrated that people who live cluttered lives are less happy.  Simplicity in almost every aspect of life leads to increased joy and peace.  Most people would probably agree in theory, but they do not know exactly where to begin with the piles of excess stuff that clutters their lives and increases their frustration.  Procrastination is the adversary of simplicity and the best friend of businesses that rent storage units.  Procrastination is tamed by even a little move toward the completion of a task.  Where to start?  Is it your closet, garage or junk drawer?  Wherever it is, do not let procrastination become the friend of your stuff.  The two are dangerous, feeding on each other and creating frustration.  Instead, do something!  It might be small, but even the completion of a small task subdues procrastination and puts the rest of your stuff on notice.

Prayer: Lord of all, you fashioned this creation with a sense of simplicity.  Where we have not mucked it up, it is beautiful.  Let us learn from what you have done, and bring that learning into our lives.  Amen.
