Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Ephesians 4:31-32
Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

Thought for the Day: At the end of the day, Paul wanted his communities to be kind, not simply to the world outside the community of faith (though they must), but to be kind to one another within the community of faith. There are days within the life of the church when kindness and a spirit of tenderheartedness are visible and breathtaking. On those days, Jesus smiles. But there are other days when people struggle to find kindness, and from the stand point of anger they withhold forgiveness. Cypress Creek Christian Church has come quite a distance over the last three years, and it pleases me to see the beautiful acts of kindness shared, but bitterness and slander are never far away. It takes a lot of spiritual energy to hold back what the world is modeling, but by the grace of our God, I believe we can continue to be the community that Paul desired to see.

Prayer: Though I may not always see eye to eye with others, I will continue to follow your teachings, Kind and Tenderhearted God, for your example is beautiful and transformative. Amen.
