Scripture: Zechariah 9:12
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.
Thought for the Day: Just when you thought the prophet’s sharp tongue had condemned you to the place of no return, a word of hope appears. Though it might seem that the prophets enjoyed the harsh critique, that would miss the true yearning within the heart of the prophet. Their job was not one of comfort or sympathy, at least for those in power. If they didn’t make 85% of the people feel really uncomfortable, they would have considered it a bad day. At the same time, the scorching fire of their tongue was thought to have the power to refine, cleanse and reshape. At the end of the day, they did what they did because their hope burned eternal. Despite what they saw before them, they believed a better day was coming. There is a time for the prophet’s voice to ring out, but the purpose behind the prophetic words must always be hope. Once hope is lost, there is no reason for the prophet to speak. If there is anything we can take away from the prophets it is their unshakeable conviction that God will win the day…even when you cannot imagine how.
Prayer: May the hope I find in you, Lord God, be both the catalyst and the objective of what I do. Amen.
