Thought for the Day: This was the title of an article I read on NBCNews.com: “Teens beat man because ‘they were just bored’.” I’m sure you find this as troubling as I did, though I am equally concerned about those who believe this represents a majority of the young people. There is no question that our culture has seen some tragic situations among our teens, but let us never allow the actions of some to define our perception of young people in general. Everyday I meet amazing young people who seek to do good, serve others, show compassion and make a better life for those around them. I am not naive enough that I ignore the real issues when they occur, but if we get to a point where we assume that such violence is the norm among our young people, then our assumption may just become the reality.
Prayer: Though violence and mean-spiritedness exists in our world, I celebrate the youth who rise above these unhealthy ways and demonstrate your love and goodness, O God. Amen.
