Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 8:7
Jesus responded, “I’ll come and heal him.”

Thought for the Day: I recently came across a quote from St. Abrose of Milan. He wrote:

No one heals himself by wounding another.

Wow! That speaks volumes as the human race has tried countless times to find its health and wellbeing in the destruction of others. Whether it is in an abusive marriage or a boss taking out his/her woundedness on employees, there is an attempt to put blame everywhere except where it belongs. Healing comes from an honest look at self which might require a counselor or an accountability partner who continues to challenge those erroneous assumptions. Feeling good by blaming others is only temporary at best, but candid self-reflection – even when it is painful – will help bring undeniable health and wellbeing.

Prayer: Guide me, O Merciful Healer, to a place where I can take a good look at myself. Strip away all that might hinder an honest assessment, and though it might be uncomfortable, continue to lead me with your grace and kindness. Amen.

  1. Thought for a day… no one heals himself by wounding another … is so hard to do. It’s easy blaming others for what they have done and how bad they made you feel but it doesn’t always make you feel better after doing it and I can speak from experience. Maybe there’s a kind way of doing it. I’ll have to try wording it differently from now on.
