Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 10:1-3
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.  I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened.  For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness.

Thought for the Day: Author and humorist, David Sedaris, offers the strange observation:

“There seemed to be some correlation
between devotion to God
and a misguided zeal for marshmallows.”

I don’t know what it is that Sedaris bases his supposition upon, but the antithesis of it is, in my opinion, the more profound truth:

There seems to be some correlation
between devotion to marshmallows
and a misguided zeal for God.

Actually, you can replace ‘marshmallows’ in this statement with almost anything.  There are countless things in this world that can skew our zeal for God.  The Apostle Paul suggests that this misguided zeal has its origin in an inadequate understanding of God’s righteousness, and for that reason, it is impossible to submit oneself to that righteousness.  Righteousness is not worship or Bible reading or prayer, but living justly for the sake of others…specifically those who are treated unjustly.  Let us keep our zeal on track by growing in our understanding of God’s righteousness, and then choosing to submit our lives to its implementation in our day to day existence.

Prayer: Help us keep our zeal for you, Lord, focused in such a way that what we do assists you in manifesting your kingdom here on earth.  Amen.
