Scripture: Isaiah 6:8
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”
Thought for the Day: One of the great hymns written in the last 30 years is “Here I Am, Lord.” I’ve heard the song at church camp with guitar, at a great cathedral accompanied by the organ, and in every style in between. It is a simple text, yet it creates the storyline of an imperfect people who hear the call of God. I appreciate how God is presented as persistent in the face of those who ‘turn away.’ The text has God saying, “I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?” Even for those who have turned away, the gracious voice bids them to come and serve. At our highest points in life, we are often too busy to serve. At our lowest points, we often feel too unworthy to serve. Even so, God extends the call to every person in every situation in hopes of hearing, “Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me…”
Prayer: My Rock and Redeemer, may the words of my mouth speak affirmatively to your call. Amen.
