Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Jeremiah 2:8
The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.

Thought for the Day: As we are a couple weeks into a study of Jeremiah, there have been numerous times where a phrase or verse has left ME a bit uncomfortable… uncomfortable in the good way. In the above verse, the prophet challenges other religious leaders for not doing their jobs. It makes me wonder what the prophet might say to me. Jeremiah points out how the priests did not ask, “Where is the LORD?” Many have probably read right past those words (I have), but the most critical task of the priest is to look for the Lord in the lives of the people. If you are going to call yourself a lawyer, you probably need to practice law. If you are going to refer to yourself as a teacher, you probably should do some teaching. If you are going to call yourself an electrician, you probably should do some work in the area of electricity. In the life of the church, and specifically those of us who consider ourselves leaders, we need to make sure that the task of our calling is the task that we are doing. This is where we need to be aware of attractive distractions. They are everywhere, and for that reason, we need to continue to hear the challenging words of the prophet who calls us back to the work at hand – to the work of the Gospel.

Prayer: Keep me focused upon you, O LORD. Help me to not only remember the task you have given me, but to keep that task as the primary work of my life. Amen.
