Scripture: Jeremiah 6:16
The LORD proclaims: Stop at the crossroads and look around; ask for the ancient paths. Where is the good way? Then walk in it and find a resting place for yourselves. But you said, “We won’t go!”
Thought for the Day: Stop and smell the roses! This verse of scripture almost sounds as if it is attempting to say the same thing, and the response is what we expect. Everyone knows they should slow down, smell the roses, look around, enjoy life, etc. I don’t believe anyone has gotten to the end of life and said, “I spent way too much time smelling roses and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of my life.” Knowing what we should do does not mean we are going to do it. Our response is, “We won’t go because…” And the word because is followed by a long list of almost excellent reasons for why we cannot do what we know we should do. The passage goes on to say that God has sent us encouragers to remind us of how we are on the wrong path – we need to pause, look around, seek what is good and life-giving, and then follow. Yet even with the divinely sent encouragers, people did not do what God was suggesting. I pray that you will have many encouragers who will come alongside you and offer you a Godly-reminder of what is important in this life. Maybe this note that you a reading will be one such reminder to stop and smell the roses…unless you’re allergic to roses, and then find something else that will make you pause, take a deep breath, and give you a moment for appreciation and awe in the presence of God.
Prayer: We all can say, “We’re too busy,” yet how often is that really true. Lord God, give us moments of rest and renewal, appreciation and gratitude, direction and encouragement. Lead us in the path of faithfulness that is demonstrated in our love for you and our neighbor. Amen.
