Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Jonah 1:15
So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

Thought for the Day: When the squalls of life descend upon us, wouldn’t it be nice if tossing someone into the chaos would appease the god of bedlam and mayhem.  There have been a few times in life when I would have flung a sacrificial entity into the chaos if I thought it would have helped, but there are probably even more times when others would have surrendered me to the storm.   This sounds like an easy solution, but as far as I know, God doesn’t work that way.  What I see in the Jonah story is an individual whose life choices have caused chaos and craziness.  When people, like Jonah, are around, everything feels out of control.  Yet tossing them away is not the answer.  Instead, shouldn’t our faith call us into the storm with them?  Shouldn’t we be the agents of God’s hope, change and peace?

Prayer: God of peace, you are the One who entered into human existence through the Christ.  Amidst our self-imposed craziness, you continue to come with a spirit of grace and hope.  Thank you!  Amen.

  1. Thank you. I just read this after a chaotic day in my classroom. I was ready to toss a couple overboard. Thank you for a new view of the storm.
