Scripture: Hebrew 13:6
So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”
Thought for the Day: It is interesting how an early Christian asked the question, “What can any person do to me?” What could happen to a 1st century Christian whose way of life stood in opposition to the ways of the world? The powers that be could arrest, torture or even kill him. So this rather nonchalant language seems to come from the mouth (or pen) of someone who is a bit naive. That’s the way it appears, but maybe this is someone who, in faith, is able to perceive a God who is always bigger than the struggles we face. I think this is when we are happy to discover that the Lord is our helper. Most of us are still a little nervous (afraid), yet God remains faithful as an assistant in the ongoing work of becoming the confident people God believes we can be.
Prayer: I have my moments of weakness, God, when fear overwhelms me. Provide me your spirit of encouragement that I may grow in confidence. Amen.
