Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 2:4
Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

Thought for the Day: After picking up Zach from tennis practice last night, the two of us were talking in the car when Zach described his aunt Stephanie (that’s one of my sisters) as being really wild and crazy.  He then added, “You know, dad, you’re pretty wild and crazy.”  I laughed and asked, “When am I ever wild and crazy?”  He had to think about it long and hard, but then he announced from the backseat, “Well, you preach Jesus every Sunday!”

Wow!  He’s right… sort of.  It’s not that I’m wild and crazy, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ is pretty wild and crazy.  Even Eugene Peterson translates this passage from Romans by describing repentance as “a radical life-change”.  From his teachings to the cross to the empty tomb, this Jesus-life is pretty preposterous.  Nonetheless, we have claimed it as our defining story, and not only do we preach it, we choose to live it.  I guess Zach is right, except that it’s not just me.  We’re all a little wild and crazy if we’ve chosen to follow Jesus.

Prayer: O Source of this Amazing Message, allow its truth to consume me and to redirect me toward a life that just might appear to be a bit unorthodox in the minds of some.  Amen.

Coming This Saturday…
