Scripture: Matthew 6:2
So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
Thought for the Day: On this day in 1957, Leave to Beaver premiered on TV. One of my favorite characters was a friend of Wally Cleaver by the name of Eddie Haskell. He was the two-faced kid who complimented Mrs. Cleaver about her pretty dress one moment and tried to weasel his way into something the next. I loved how Mrs. Cleaver saw through it all, yet still treated him with kindness…and a fair amount of caution. Eddie may not have been a hypocrite, but it reminds me of how hypocrisy and similar behavior fool very few people in the end. Those who encounter two-faced behavior may choose to remain kind like Mrs. Cleaver, but their capacity to trust will have been undercut. We should all strive to maintain a consistent presentation of our true identity.
Prayer: In the recognition of just how damaging hypocrisy can be, I seek your support in living a consistent life. Thank you, Lord! Amen.
