Scripture: Matthew 23:25 (the Message)
“You’re hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You burnish the surface of your cups and bowls so they sparkle in the sun, while the insides are maggoty with your greed and gluttony.
Thought for the Day: The translation of the Bible that we know as the Message (translated by Eugene Peterson) puts a modern day spin on the scriptures, and it is often more earthy and sharp. In some situation, the rougher translation might be closer to the real intention of the Biblical authors. Matthew’s Gospel quite often portrays Jesus as a guy who does not mince words. He sharply criticizes those who allow greed and gluttony to be their driving values, especially those who continue to maintain an outward appearance of religiosity. I’m reminded of a quote by Peter DeVries: “Gluttony is an emotional escape, a sign that something is eating us.” Peterson’s vivid picture of these maggots helps to portray the serious nature of these unhealthy emotional desires.
Prayer: With your loving and healing spirit, O Lord, wash me both outside and inside. Amen.
