Scripture: Daniel 6:10
Although Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he continued to go to his house, which had windows in its upper room open toward Jerusalem, and to get down on his knees three times a day to pray to his God and praise him, just as he had done previously.
Thought for the Day: Some unkind people were trying to get Daniel in trouble, and so they got the king to pass a new law that banned all prayers except those offered to the king. Though Daniel was an upright man and would have usually followed the laws of the land, this law challenged the central tenants of his faith. He continued to do what he always did…he prayed quietly and without self-glorification. This amazing act of faithfulness nearly got him executed. In your faith, what is nonnegotiable? If you really want to know what is important to you, spend time trying to answer that question. At the same time, don’t allow silly ideological debates to become one of those nonnegotiables. And don’t allow a moment of faithfulness to become an opportunity for self-glorification. God loves faithfulness, but is not a fan of arrogance. Arrogance appears to defeat the whole point of faithfulness.
Prayer: Lord God, teach me to be flexible and respectful of those who hold different beliefs. At the same time, give me strength of character to uphold the essential aspects of my beliefs without ever forcing them on anyone. Amen.
