Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 1:1
The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Thought for the Day: About ten years ago, Peter Gomes wrote a book entitled, The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus: What’s so Good about the Good News?  I found the book challenging and insightful, but I was strangely drawn again and again to the subtitle of the book: “What’s so Good about the Good News?”  Throughout Christian history, we have presented understandings of the Good News (the Gospel) that in no way resembled anything most folks would consider good. Oh sure, it might have been good for a limited few, specifically those who were defining the Good News. But often what they defended had no resemblance to the Jesus of faith. In his book, Gomes quotes G.K. Chesterton who said, “Christianity is not a faith that has been tried and found wanting, but a faith that has been wanted and never tried.” Maybe there lies the challenge for us all when it comes to our search for what is good about the Good News, what is exceptionally joyous for humanity in this thing we know as the Gospel. Let us take it out for a test-drive, and see if the goodness we claim is truly good for all of creation.

Prayer: Continue to help me, Gracious God, to be more receptive to the goodness and grace you are attempting to reveal in this world. Amen.
