Just about everyone I know would like to be blessed. In the Bible, the full measure of blessing is both spiritual and material. Yes, it includes the sense that God is with us even when times are tough. Blessing also includes being a part of the great belongings of family, friends and the congregation. Supportive relationships are such a blessing. And it also includes the material element – having food, shelter, clothing, on which we count.
So how does one follow the pathway to blessing? Throughout the Bible, we are told that the route to blessing begins with generosity, with sharing, with giving.
How many times have you heard someone who helped someone else say, “I received so much more than I gave.” Of course we don’t give in order to receive. But a generous spirit creates a world of generosity in which the gift comes back to enrich the life of the giver.
When we make an offering, we say, “I want to be part of a world like that. I choose to be generous.”
