Scripture: Deuteronomy 15:11
Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.”
Thought for the Day: Yesterday, Cypress Creek Christian Church hosted an event for the Coastal Plains Area of our denomination. The event was entitled, “Creating a Culture of generosity.” Though the turnout from the other churches was a bit disappointing, the event itself was excellent. As we talked about creating a culture of generosity, Rev Bruce Barkhauer (one of the speakers) took it a step further when he suggest that we not only need to help create this culture of generosity within our congregations, but we need to encourage a sense of excitement when it comes to participating in this new culture. There are plenty of people who may act generously, but they’re not very excited about it. In fact, their motivation is the tax break they’ll receive or the naming rights of the building. As followers of Jesus Christ, our motivation is very different. And we not only desire to participate in the cultural shift toward generosity and away from scarcity, but we desire to reveal the joy we have found in being generous people.
Prayer: Lord of the Abundant Way, your love flows into the world and into us with more than would ever be needed. Through your Spirit, teach us how we can enjoy this copious gift, while also making it the core of our living. Amen.
Tomorrow is the Day!
