Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 20:35
In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Thought for the Day: In this chapter, the Apostle Paul has reached out to those in Ephesus, inviting them to meet him in Miletus. In a lengthy speech, his closing thoughts are these words found in vs. 35. Throughout his speech, Paul continued to reinforce the idea that it was never about him, hoping that this selflessness would become a model for the Ephesians. Yet at the end of the day, it was always about giving of self for the sake of the weak. And then of course, Paul followed it with the familiar words that suggested it is more blessed to give than to receive. I’m sure there was an initial raising of eyebrows, but then people looked at Paul who gave so much, and he clearly lived as one who was blessed beyond measure. There is so much to be learned when we observe those who have sought to follow in the ways of Jesus.

Prayer: Continue to provide me witnesses, O Lord who inspires, for I need good models if I am going to follow in the ways of my savior, Jesus. Amen.
