Ecclesiological Etchings: 11-01-15 (All Saints’ Day)

Ecclesiological Etchings

(I’m rerunning this devotional—one of my favorite quotes)

Scripture: James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Thought for the Day: Frederick Buechner is one of my favorite authors, in part, for the way he takes deep theological ideas and brings them down to my level.  Some of his writings have what appear to be a pithy quality to them, yet they are neither simple nor shallow. On this All Saint’s Day, I am touched by his description of a saint.  Buechner writes, “In God’s holy flirtation with the world, God occasionally drops a handkerchief. These handkerchiefs are called saints.” These humble individuals are dropped among us, and their lives woo us to God.

Prayer: For all your many saints, O God, I give you thanks.  Amen.
