Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 6:21
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Thought for the Day: I don’t want to suggest that the Kingdom of God is a place where people’s hurts are ignored or minimized, but my image of God’s Gracious Reign includes a lot of laughter. Maybe it’s my desire to occasionally brush up against this holy reality that has me seeking out and celebrating humor.  It is also the reason that I must thank Cypress Creek Christian Church for putting up with my worship shenanigans (see below).  Most folks had not realized it was Preach Like a Pirate Sunday.  In fact, no one except for me knew it was Preach Like a Pirate Sunday.  Yet when I read the passage and considered the Saints, it just seemed like the right thing to do.  Yes, a little silly.  Yes, a bit out of the ordinary.  But it says something really important about a church that is willing to give its pastor some freedom to do a few things outside the customary parameters of worship. Thanks for giving me that gift!  Thanks for giving me a few smiles this morning.

Prayer: Provide me opportunities of laughter, O Lord who promised laughter to those who could not imagine even a smile amidst their grief.  Allow for joy and silliness and giggles to lift the shadows that hang over so many in the world.  Allow us to participate in your holy and healing laughter. Amen.
