Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 3:21-22
But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction.

Thought for the Day: After yesterday’s downer of a passage, this is where Paul is able to make the Good News shine. I love the language of “no distinction” as it echos the life and love of Jesus. In the context of Romans, he was referring to Jews and Gentiles where the most significant tension was found, but it’s not language confined to that specific historic context. Paul has basically said to this point, “You’re both screw-ups, but in the life and love of Jesus Christ, there is no distinction in how that life is given and how that love is shared.” Imagine who in today’s world Jesus might reference – “Republicans and Democrats, you’re both screw-ups, but in the life and love of Jesus Christ, there is no distinction in how that life is given and how that love is shared. So don’t get all haughty and arrogant. You’re loved, not for your accomplishments – so few on both sides – but because of who God is. And oh yes, you independents, don’t feel too smug. There is no distinction whatsoever.” Did I step over the line on this one?

Prayer: Continue to keep me humble, O Mighty God who chose the path of humility. Keep me humble for it is there that I am better able to receive the gift of your life and love. Amen.
