Scripture: Romans 8:35-36
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”
Thought for the Day: This passage almost sounds as if it is a contradiction as Paul claims that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, but then describes us as sheep heading out for the slaughtered. For many people, the suggestion of being killed does not sound like someone who is being protected by Christ. But there lies the confusion… the love of Christ does not equate to protection or security. All we need to do is look at the amazing faithfulness of the martyrs. They didn’t do what they were doing in the belief that Christ would protect them. They did what they did because it is what faithful people do, but they believed passionately that there was nothing, not even persecution, that would separate them from the love of Christ.
Prayer: Grant me the faith, O Lord, that knows your immeasurable love amidst all the difficulties life can impose. Amen.
