Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 6:4-5
All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads.

Thought for the Day: A Florida friend, Brad Galbraith, posted the following on Facebook:

While riding my bike this morning, I got hit by a truck. Fortunately, it was just a glancing blow. No injuries. Normally, when a driver makes a mistake and hits a cyclist, they yell and scream and blame the cyclist for riding on the road rather than on the sidewalk. This time, the driver shocked me by immediately taking full responsibility, apologizing profusely, and thanking God he didn’t kill me. I’ve never almost been killed by a nicer guy!

In a time when so many people are quick to point fingers, cast blame and ignore responsibility, it is refreshing to hear of someone who tests/examines his own work/deeds, and chooses to carry the load of responsibility. It can be embarrassing, frightening, even expensive, when we make a mistake. Yet when people choose to claim responsibility, it helps others to dissuade irresponsibility.

And it is nice to hear someone say, “I’ve never almost been killed by a nicer guy!”

Prayer: Continue to remind me, Gracious God, how doing right and taking responsibility is pleasing to you and important for this world. Amen.
