Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 1:16-18
As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” Right away, they left their nets and followed him.

Thought for the Day: Constantly Lievens was a Jesuit Priest and missionary to India. Today is the anniversary of his death (1893). He first started serving in November of 1885, but he quickly noticed how the people had no basic rights and were treated horribly. So Constantly went before the English Colonial Courts to fight on behalf of the indigenous people, and he won. His work on their behalf earned him the name Savior which gave Constantly an entry point into preaching the Gospel of Jesus, the true Savior. Within two years, 15,000 people were baptized and another 40,000 were coming to hear the teachings about Jesus. This is only one example of where a follower of Jesus followed so closely that others saw Jesus through him. Many were inspired by Constantly’s work. His life was both faithful and transparent, and for that reason, those who saw him saw Jesus as well.

Prayer: Teach us your ways, Merciful God, for we wish to fish for the lost and broken souls of this world. Teach us your ways so that our lives can point to you. Amen.
