Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Titus 1:9
He must have a firm grasp of the word that is trustworthy in accordance with the teaching, so that he may be able both to preach with sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.

Thought for the Day: The phrase trustworthy in accordance with teaching is an interesting statement.  Practically any opinion about scripture can find some supportive group who will declare it to be trustworthy and in accordance with their teaching.  Whose definition wins out in the end?  Is it the person who speaks with a loud voice, walks with a big stick or presents his/her opinion with lots of glitz and glitter?  There are always going to be disagreements among those who claim to follow Jesus.  The Bible itself is full of such disagreements, for the multiple writings within the Bible do not have a single author.  We need to be careful not to isolate ourselves with those whom we agree.  We need to engage a great diversity of opinions, reaching across racial, geographic and historical boundaries.  In the end our basic opinions may not change dramatically, but there will be a new depth to what we might describe as trustworthy and in accordance with the teaching.

Prayer: Allow me to trust in your spirit, O God, as it speaks through a diversity of voices.  Amen.
