Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 13:10-11
Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.”

Thought for the Day: Why does a flamingo lift up one leg? Because if it lifted up both legs it would fall! I remember my son being told that joke a few years back by another young boy. My son laughed and laughed to the point I thought he was going to hurt himself. Then suddenly he stopped laughing, looked at me and said, “I don’t get it.” I think on more than one occasion the disciples heard a teaching of Jesus and nodded in full agreement only to later ask, “What?” As strange as this may sound, this faith thing is not all that complicated, but its implications and ramifications are challenging and will take a lifetime to learn…maybe longer. The first step is to be unafraid of asking, “What? Who? How?” Otherwise we’ll be like that person laughing hysterically at the joke who really doesn’t get it.

Prayer: Merciful God, assist me as I struggle with the repercussions of saying that I love you and will love my neighbor as myself. Amen.
