Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Titus 2:2
Tell the older men to be temperate, serious, prudent, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.

Thought for the Day: Though this passage begins what I would describe as a fairly sexist section of scripture that is a reflection of the time and not of Jesus, I would also point out that there is still good advice to be found.  Instead of selectively giving some of this advice to one gender or the other, I believe there is important information for all people in every verse.  In this one verse before us, there is a list of righteous qualities that would take a lifetime to explore.  And even then, most of us would fall short.  For some people, my words may sound pessimistic, but that is not my intention.  Just because something will probably never be fully experienced should not keep a person from trying.  Some day I’d like to visit the Amazon jungle even though I know my visit will only be a very small portion of the full Amazon experience.  Recognizing the minimal exposure I’d have does not diminish my yearning to go. In fact, it increases the excitement…in the same way striving toward these lofty aspirations increase my faithful longing.

Prayer: O God, give me the heart of an explorer so that my life becomes a nonstop spiritual expedition of what faith has to offer. Amen.

See you this morning
and later this evening.
