Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 34:14
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

Thought for the Day: I recently did an internet search on praying for peace.  I was fascinated by the high percentage of Protestant sites that focused on praying for personal peace and happiness. Now this was far from scientific research, but most of the websites that were clearly Christian (non-Catholic) sounded more like the big money self-help titles from your local bookstore. In these websites, Jesus was used more like a cheerleader in your quest for personal peace, happiness, financial security and early retirement. In general, the Catholic and non-Christian (often using the term ‘praying” more generically than I would) spoke about this purposeful and sacrificial pursuit of peace – among communities, races, religions and nations. I don’t know about you, but that sure sounds a lot like Jesus.  Funny how some of us Protestants are being outdone by our Catholic brothers and sisters, though I don’t feel so bad about that.  It is the non-Christians proclaiming the Gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15) better than some Protestant groups that I find troubling…or maybe I should be happy that someone is doing it well.

Prayer: Let me hear again your Gospel, O God of Grace, so I can move away from evil and self-centered living and toward a life that peruses true peace. Amen.
