Scripture: Romans 9:1-2
I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit—I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.
Thought for the Day: The Apostle Paul feels great anguish for the division he sees within the community, and it is from this anguish that he must speak the truth he has discovered in Christ. Anguish can so often be debilitating – leaving us feeling helpless or simply too grieved to do anything. For Paul, that is not the case. This anguish shows his love and concern for the people, but it requires the nudging of the Holy Spirit if one is to move beyond simple anguish and to true engagement. And of course, this requires an openness to the Holy Spirit. Too often anguish reduces our receptiveness to the Spirit, when it fact, it should be a time of great opportunity. Paul was open.
Prayer: O Lord God, when I feel anguish and my heart is broken, use it as an opportunity to encourage and inspire me to act. Allow your Holy Spirit to confront and prod me to be a witness of your truth. Amen.
