Thought for the Day: Amidst all the stories coming out of Rio these days, I was especially interested in the one about women’s gymnastics. No, I’m not talking about the United States’ powerhouse team, though as a former gymnast, I am enjoying all their gold medals. The story of real interest to me was when Lee Eun-ju from South Korea (17 years old) approached a North Korean gymnast by the name of Hong Un-jong (27 years old) during a training session. These two nations have not been on friendly terms for decades, and that is an understatement. These two women from opposite sides of the Korean demilitarized zone posed and smiling for a selfie on Lee Eun-ju’s phone (see picture below). Two beautiful young women reminding us all how the rhetoric of governments and political bickering has us objectifying nations – when in fact, there are wonderful caring human beings underneath all the posturing and power-plays. May God use this gentle gesture as a reminder of what is truly important.
Prayer: Help us, O God of Mercy, to see the beauty of every human being. Give us hearts that do not objectify and dismiss the life-spirit you have put into each person. Amen.
