Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Exodus 22:22-23
You shall not abuse any widow or orphan.  If you do abuse them, when they cry out to me, I will surely heed their cry;

Thought for the Day: Yesterday I watched a TV special describing the horrors of the Priests’ Sexual Abuse Scandal.  It was one of those shows you don’t really wish to watch, yet there was something important about watching it.  The film, of course, did not change what had occurred, but I hope those who see it will forever remember that no institution, including the church, should be protected above the innocent and weak.  The cries of the orphans and the abused have been heard by God, and God will find a way of responding to their weeping.   What we must remember is that the church is the entity to which God first turns, yet if the church fails its mission, God will always find another way.

Prayer: Mighty God, wherever the church has sinned against you and the least among us, let us be confessional – seeking restitution and reconciliation where needed. We desire to be the agents by which you respond to the cries of those who are abused.  Amen.
