Scripture: Psalm 34:14
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
Thought for the Day: Last night, I was a able to attend the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service hosted by our friends at Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. It was a wonderful service, including speakers representing: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Sikh community and Islam. Each representative spoke beautifully, with both humor and challenge. At the close of the service, Afshan Jilani (who has often presented a unique piece she authored) offered us a poem entitled: It’s All Noise Until We Listen. In it was a line that stuck with me: “War on terror or war on hope.” So much of the violence comes from a place of hopelessness, and too often the response to violence is empty of any hope. The words of scripture (the scriptures across the different religions) invite us to turn away from evil and to pursue goodness and peace. To do so, requires hope – for in the face of evil, the future often appears very dark. It is only those who are capable of believing in what is not currently visible who are able to create an alternative to the evil.
Prayer: Give me hope, Lord God, in the face of violence; give me hope in the face of darkness; give me hope in the face of evil. Give me hope for the sake of your world. Amen.
