Scripture: Hebrews 6:3 (the Message)
God helping us, we’ll stay true to all that. But there’s so much more. Let’s get on with it!
Thought for the Day: I was cleaning out my car last night, and underneath my seat was a fortune from a fortune cookie. This was a good reminder of my need to clean out my car a bit more often as it has probably been six months since I was last in a Chinese restaurant to get a fortune cookie. I unfolded it and read, “Use your abilities at this time to stay focused on your goal. Persevere, and you will succeed.” I do not put a lot of stock in fortunes that are found in rather bland tasting cookies, but those words resonated with me – especially because I had just read the above passage in the book of Hebrews. Some will say that it is difficult enough to discern God’s call, let alone follow this calling. But I would like to suggest that spotting God’s call is not as difficult as we might make it. The life of Jesus, specifically his amazing way of creating a visible and tangible love that few could resist, can be a pretty tangible goal. We will never do it as well as he did (well actually, he did say that the community of faith would do even greater works), but working on our capacity to love, showing forgiveness, and celebrating the beauty and value of others is a pretty good starting place. I may not be loaded down with gifts and talents, but I do have some basic skills that, if focused on the goal of following Jesus, could potentially see success in bringing others into a fuller experience of God’s unconditional love.
Prayer: Lord, help us stay true to all that you have set before us in the life and teachings of Jesus. Even if I never fully achieve his magnificent example, may I magnify you through my perseverance and faithfulness to the task. Amen.
