Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 1:25
For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Thought for the Day: There have been two major news stories on Facebook in the last 18 hours.  The first was the live version of The Sound of Music on NBC.  It appears to have received mixed reviews, though I was unable to watch it.  The other news story was a bit more important, and that story was the death of Nelson Mandela.  Though many are grieving the death of this man, I have read only praise for his amazing witness.  I was first introduced to him in 1983 as I became involved in the Anti-Apartheid Movement.  In 1985, I protested outside the South African Embassy and demanded the release of Mr. Mandela who at that time had been held in prison for some 20 years.  Like many of you, I remember the day he walked out of prison, his leadership in transforming the racist rule of South Africa, and his eventual election as the country’s president.  His life is worthy of praise, and there is so much to remember about who he was.  The first quote I ever read from him was found in a letter to his wife.  He had written to her from prison these words, “Difficulties break some men but make others.”  The 27 years Mr. Mandela spent in prison would have broken most of us, but it truly made a man who helped to liberate his nation from its hatred and inequality.  Fear gave way to hope, and distrust was overcome through understanding.  Though not perfect, the process of reconciliation healed a nation that could have turned into a bloodbath of revenge and renewed hatred.  This day, I give thanks for Nelson Mandela and all those who continue to work for equality among all people.

Prayer: This day, O Mighty God, I give you thanks for giving us the life-witness of Nelson Mandela.  May we all strive to do what we can to see his dream to completion – a world where every human being is respected and valued.  Amen.
