Scripture: Mark 6:8
He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts…
Thought for the Day: In today’s airline travel with checked bags costing money, the disciples would have done well. I don’t know if a disciple would be allowed to carry a staff on the plane, but if so, there would be very little need for the overhead compartment. The way we pack and how we travel says a lot about who we are and how we intend to live our lives…and not just in regard to an upcoming vacation, but also our spiritual journey. As we move toward the second Sunday of Advent on this Expedition of Expectation, let us be mindful of the excess baggage for which we will be paying.
Prayer: Provide me with a packing list, O God, as I prepare to venture forth in the name of the loving Christ Child. Amen.

As someone who chronically overpacks for vacations, to be ready for any contingency, I can see the allure of only carrying a staff. And the trust it entails in the people along the way.
Amen! I’m a work in progress…something around a cautious trusting.
