Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Thought for the Day: Today is Anti-Human Trafficking Day.  That part of me that desires to remain naive cannot believe that we have an Anti-Human Trafficking Day in 2013, but naiveté is a friend of those who promote trafficking of human beings – including within the sex industry.  The church cannot be naive, for the church is the community infused with the Spirit, a community of people who have allowed that Spirit to dwell within them.  If Paul’s words are correct, and freedom is found wherever the Spirit is present, then the body that both represents and communicates that Spirit (the church) needs to be present wherever there is slavery…especially when it is blocks from the church’s front door.   Join me in praying for all those who find themselves caught in an ugly and destructive system, caught there by powers and principalities of which they cannot fight alone.  Let us pray for those who are caught, but let us also speak on behalf of the Spirit; let us be present on behalf of the Spirit; let us act on behalf of the Spirit.

Prayer: O God, you chose to be Emmanuel for the sake of humanity.  Your presence in the world demonstrated the depth of your love; your voice proclaimed liberation for the enslaved; your invitation to the table created a sense of welcome for all.  May your church, empowered by your Spirit, continue the amazing work of your Word embodied.  Amen.
