Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 1:7
He [John the Baptist] proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of this sandals.”

Thought for the Day: We struggle with humility in today’s world. With Reality TV, people are searching for their 15 minutes of fame…or what is perceived as fame, but is more like a circus with only clowns. Humility is not an admired quality in our culture. In fact, it is looked upon as weakness. But somewhere along the line I read that humility is the sign of true contentment. John the Baptist appears to have been a rather famous guy in his time. He was drawing lots of attention and one might understand how it could have easily gone to his head. Instead, John humbles himself before the one who is to come, a person John has not even met. It takes a strong sense of self to step back before another, yet how much better would our world be if more people sought their 15 minutes of humility at least once a day.

Prayer: The One who is to be worshiped was the one who humbled himself before others. May I learn from the many examples of humility and live a more humble life. Amen.
