Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 4:4
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

Thought for the Day: Paul never tells the story of Jesus’ birth. This verse from Galatians is about as close as Paul gets to telling the Christmas story. Some scholars suggest that Paul would not have known the birth stories that are so central to this time of year. I can’t say for sure either way, but Paul’s more philosophical approach to life has him focusing less on the birth canal of a woman and more on a cosmic birthing process that is a culmination of all time and space. To speak of ‘fullness’ is to describe a moment in time that is fully ripe with possibility. This moment was like no other moment in the universe’s history. Had Jesus come ten years earlier or ten years later, the fullness of the moment would have been missed and a man named Jesus would have been long forgotten. I believe we continue to have “fullness of time” moments where everything is ripe with possibility, yet too often time was ready and the church was not. What holy moment might be fully pregnant and ready for another nativity of grace? If such a moment should exist, are we available for it?

Prayer: Provide me the spiritual insight to see and experience your presence breaking into this world anew. O Redeeming God, we are overjoyed for the fullness of time that brought us Jesus. As we seek to follow his life and teachings, let us look for other moments where you are gifting the world. Amen.
