Ecclesiological Etchings: 12-21-12

Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 4:16
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.

Thought for the Day: The Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, has traditionally been a time when Christians stayed up late and told stories by candlelight.  Though the night was long, both the small flame and the stories of the faith kept the community strong until dawn.  Some people might scoff at rituals, but if you think about it, the ritual around the Winter Solstice taught those who participated that even in the longest period of darkness, the light of Christ remains until the dawn arrives…and it will arrive.

Prayer: May your presence, O Holy One, become the flame of hope when the night never seems to end.  Amen.
